Our Mission

The BlackAFinSTEM Collective seeks to support, uplift, and amplify Black STEM professionals in natural resources and the environment through professional development, career connection, and community engagement. We aim to inspire new audiences to engage in nature and share the stories of Black conservationists from across the African diaspora.

The Vision for

Black Birders Week

  • Equitable Access to Nature: Black Birders Week envisions a future where all individuals, regardless of age, ability, gender, or socioeconomic factors, have equal access to and feel welcome in outdoor spaces. By promoting diversity and inclusion within birding and nature-based activities, the event strives to create a more equitable and accessible outdoor environment where everyone can enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

  • Empowerment and Representation: The event week aims to introduce and empower Black individuals to pursue careers and opportunities in ornithology, ecology, and related disciplines. By showcasing the achievements and stories of Black birders and scientists, Black Birders Week inspires future generations of Black nature enthusiasts and professionals while challenging systemic barriers and stereotypes that have historically marginalized Black voices in these spaces.

  • Environmental Justice and Advocacy: Black Birders Week recognizes the interconnectedness of social and environmental issues and seeks to promote environmental justice and conservation efforts that prioritize marginalized communities. By amplifying the voices of Black environmentalists and advocating for inclusive and equitable conservation practices, the event contributes to broader efforts to address systemic inequalities and create a more just and sustainable world for all.
